An innovative new treatment for people suffering Type 2 diabetes is now available in the UAE, where one in five people suffer from the disease.
Byetta (Exenatide), the first of a new class of medicine that mimics a blood sugar-regulating hormone in the body, has been available in the USA since 2005 and is now offered in more than 23 countries and used by more than 700,000 diabetes patients worldwide.
Byetta, which is co-developed by Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals, has been a major success in the countries where it has been released because c the treatment’s effectiveness in regulating blood sugars and its convenience of use compared to insulin. A significant effect of Exenatide is weight loss, which is a major benefit for Type 2 diabetes patients, who are often overweight.
