With films like ‘Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year,’ Indian cinema is addressing modern urban realities in a way that appeals to all film lovers anywhere in the world, says Ranbir Kapoor, the star of the film, which makes its World Premiere and Opening Gala at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF 2009)
The young star is a sensation among young and old in India, having clinched back-to-back hits this year, through performances that have reflected the aspirations of Indian youth.
“Rocket Singh is a fresh Indian film, the sort seldom seen in Indian cinema. Youngsters, especially academic underachievers and all who aspire to be achievers, will relate to my character at some level,” said Kapoor.
Describing Dubai as a second home for most Indians, he said that Indian films are gaining strong appreciation from the region with the Arab world and India sharing cultural similarities.
Despite the success of his films – making him one of the most successful Hindi film actors this year – Kapoor takes the career-high effortlessly, saying he is only a beginner and is taking the career challenges as they come.
Dorothee Wenner, Programmer, Celebration of Indian Cinema, said Rocket Singh marks a new approach to Indian film making, and is a never before seen attempt at discovering modern urban realities, marked by humour. “This film is a true rediscovery of the realities of today, and has universal appeal.”
Rocket Singh is directed by Shimit Amin, the acclaimed director of Chak De India, and has been scripted by Jaideep Sahni, both of whom are joining Ranbir for the film’s premiere in Dubai.
The film narrates the story of a fresh graduate with grades that are nothing to brag about. But that does not stop him from launching himself into joining the ambitious, optimistic an, burgeoning Indian urban workforce, armed with a belief in himself and the great urban Indian career dream.
