1. New EcoBoostâ„¢ direct-injection “new design, new engine, new thinking”
2. EcoBoostâ„¢ voted Ward’s Auto World Top Ten Engines in the World

Mazen Hammoud with EcoBoostFord’s traditional mix of strength, style and showmanship has found a new, high-profile stable mate at this year’s Dubai Motor Show. Sustainability and responsibility are two of the driving forces behind recent global headlines, and Ford is playing a leading role in some good news for the environment.

Ford Motor Company is accelerating the introduction of affordable green technologies in its vehicles and the best example for this is the EcoBoostâ„¢ engine, according to Ford’s EcoBoost Powertrain Calibration manager, Dr Mazen Hammoud who addressed the audience in Dubai Motorshow’s Sustainable Mobility forum today.

“Ford Motor Company is dedicated to make affordable green technologies available across its lineup around the world,” he said. “While implementing near-, mid- and long-term plans, we continue to achieve efficiencies that are quickly leading to fuel economy improvements today,” Hammoud said.

“For many years, efficiency has been the watchword of the motor industry, but now the associations have changed,” added Dr Hammoud, who handles large V6 and small V8 powerpacks including the first EcoBoost application. “Priorities are now with ecology, not economy and with EcoBoost, we have refined both our engines and our thinking. The result is that we can provide the performance and not sacrifice our principles of a cleaner environment.”

EcoBoost is Ford Motor Company’s new high-volume, affordable engine technology slated for a range of global vehicles – from small cars to large trucks. Ford plans to introduce EcoBoost engines in its Middle East product lineup beginning in the 2011 model year on the Ford Taurus SHO, Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT.  By 2013, this technology will power more than 1.3 million vehicles globally each year.

The new high-performance, fuel-saving EcoBoost is the culmination of years of engineering, producing power without compromise, using greater efficiency for reduced emissions and lower costs. The technology involved is a major turning point in the auto industry, and it uses smaller-displacement gas engines, combined with fuel-saving direct injection technologies, to provide improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance.

EcoBoost uses turbo-charging and direct gasoline injection to boost engine output, marking a major milestone in the Ford strategy to deliver technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains.

“This is great news on three fronts,” said Dr. Hammoud. “Firstly, we have the technology and know-how to help make an immediate impact on the environment, secondly we have the means to develop this amazing new engine, and thirdly, we have the experience of innovation to invest in the future.”
And it seems that industry experts are taking note of this benchmarking innovation. Just last week, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, was named as one of the Ward’s Auto World’s “10 Best Engines” for 2010, having been nominated for best-in-class fuel economy.

The technology has already made waves in the engineering community, with the 3.5-liter version of the engine contributing 125 new patents and patent applications. The additions build on Ford Motor Company’s current roster of 4,618 active U.S. patents, with thousands more patent applications pending.

Ford’s EcoBoost engine also was honored earlier this year with a Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award (www.popularmechanics.com). The Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards, now in their fifth year, recognize products and celebrate innovations poised to change the world, and the passionate, smart creators behind them. Ford is the only automaker this year to receive the accolade.
