More than 700 parents and grandparents filled the Sunny Varkey Centre for Performing Arts, as Dubai Modern High School students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 displayed their talents at the sixth annual ‘Grandparents Day,’ which brought together grand parents and little ones in a unique bonding initiative.
After the assembly, held especially for the grandparents, the students took them around the school, giving a tour of their classrooms and sharing aspects of school life. The proud grandparents shared their stories from childhood much to the delight of the little ones.
Grandparents Day is a key event that adds to the GEMS Parent Engagement initiative. Parent engagement in learning is essential if students are to reach their full potential but sometimes parents are so busy with work that they cannot spend the amount of time they would like to with their children. This is where grandparents can play a significant role by taking a daily interest in the studies of the little ones and have regular conversations with them.
Wendy Berliner, Director, Parent Engagement for GEMS Education, said: “It is wonderful to see so many committed grandparents attending classes and sharing stories with their grandchildren. This will help reinforce to their student grandchildren how important learning is, help the students do even better at their studies and help grandparents understand a modern school which will give them ideas for discussion with their grandchildren in the days and weeks to come.â€

Dubai Modern High School is part of the GEMS Education network of schools that offers the curriculum of CISCE Board to children from Foundation Stage 1 to Year 12.
