In line with its strategy to elevate the Emirate’s health standards and raise awareness on critical diseases, the National Health Insurance Company, Daman, the leading health insurer in the region, marks the International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Daman’s staff marked the occasion by distinctly wearing the color blue, recognized as the international color for prostate cancer awareness. Informative fliers about the disease and blue colored ribbon pins were distributed to clients visiting Daman’s branches and corporate sales center; to add to the overall awareness and support.
Commenting on this initiative, Dr. Michael Bitzer, CEO of Daman, said: “Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men. Early detection offers the best chance at long-term survival. Annual screening is recommended for all men over age 45.â€
In 2008, Daman introduced a free annual Prostatic Cancer Screening to it benefits providing all its male members aged 45 and above enrolled in most of Daman’s plans. The free screening includes a clinical exam, the Rectal Sonogram and the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test which can be done once a year.
Dr. Bitzer added: ““The inclusion of such a benefit in our plans reflects our commitment to the wellbeing of the community. We hope that by including the free screening in our plans, men will be encouraged to take the test.”
Both the American Cancer Society and the American Urological Association recommend annual Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests, along with the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) for all men over 50 and beginning at age 40 for men with high-risk.
