The enormous Dubai Panorama image, taken by photographer Gerald Donovan on April 23rd 2010, was the world’s largest digital image, a whopping 45 GigaPixel picture taking in the Dubai skyline that was feted around the world, driving millions of Internet clicks and even featuring on the Facebook page of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Now the iconic panoramic image of Dubai has been re-rendered and printed out as a massive high resolution print some twenty feet long and four feet wide. The image, the first of a limited edition of ten prints of this size, will be auctioned for charity and will be displayed for the first time at GeekFest Dubai on Thursday 28th April.

“The image was made possible using cutting-edge robotics and software to take thousands of high resolution images sequentially, rather like bricks in a wall. These are then stitched together to form the entire, 45 Gigapixel image,” said Donovan. “This print is highly unique and represents a technological achievement as much as it depicts Dubai’s developmental achievements. Now, on Dubai 45 Gigapixel’s first anniversary, we’re asking the attendees at GeekFest which charitable cause they would like to benefit from the auction, which will be held online.”

GeekFest Dubai is the offline social event for online socialisers, bringing together developers, bloggers, social media enthusiasts, gadget fans and anyone else who has an interest in online, innovation, design and digital technologies. Held at The Shelter in Al Qouz, the event hosts a series of perennially popular ‘GeekTalks’ taking place in Shelter’s private cinema, GameFest which is powered this time by online technology, gadget and games portal tbreak and will also feature a showcase of mobile applications developed by UAE based developers.

The talks will include contributions from blogger Ion Gonzaga, blog aggregator MiddleEastPosts, Dubai review website Voila Dubai and popular Lebanese cartoonist Jumana Medlej.

The event is to be the last GeekFest Dubai held at The Shelter’s current location, with a new Shelter under construction in time for the next event.
