The United Arab Emirates ranks 33 in the 2011 Global Peace Index (GPI) announced today. Levels of world peace dropped for the third consecutive year according to the Index. An increased risk of terrorism and unrest in the Middle East and North Africa drove dramatic changes in national rankings.
Now in its fifth year, it is produced by the Institute for Economic and Peace and is the world’s only ranking of nations according to their states of peace. It uses 23 separate indicators to gauge ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society and militarization in 153 countries.
The United Arab Emirates experiences a large increase in peacefulness according to the 2011 GPI, and is now the third most peaceful nation in the Middle East. Although relations with neighboring countries worsened, both political stability and respect for human rights increased.
