Steel prices slide 3.4 percent in October

Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi (SCAD) issued its monthly report on the prices of building materials for the month of October 2011.  The  report, which presents a wide range of price data, is intended to serve the needs of data users in the public and private sectors in research, planning and decision making in ways that support the construction sector, besides related and dependent sectors.

As SCAD’s report reveals, the average prices of several building materials groups have undergone various changes during October compared with September 2011, with the largest rise recorded in the average price of the “Construction Labour” group, which advanced 5.8 percent in October 2011, as all items within this group registered price increases in the range of 5.3 – 12.0 per cent. “Waterproofing products” group rose by 5.1 per cent mainly as a result of a 15.4 per cent increase in the price of “Bitumen/Oxidized Hot (115/15) primer 180 kg/S. Arabia”. In addition, the prices of “Paints” and “Bathroom Set without Accessories” rose by 5.0 per cent and 2.8 per cent, respectively.

On the other hand the prices of electrical wires for small buildings/apartments decreased by 6.7 per cent as the prices for the items of this group retreated by 5.6-7.2 per cent. Prices drops were also recorded for some other groups, including “Natural Stone”, which decreased by 5.9 per cent, “Steel” by 3.4 per cent and “(PVC) Pipes” by 3.3 per cent.

SCAD’s report also reviews changes in building materials prices in October 2011 compared with October 2010, with the “Transport equipment rents ” group showing the largest rise (27.3 percent) between the periods compared, followed by the prices Aggregates and Sand”, which climbed 21.9 per cent as all items within this group registered price increases of 3.6 – 44.4 per cent. In addition, prices of “Wires for residential towers” rose by 16.7 per cent and “Steel” by 16.3 per cent.

In contrast, some other commodity groups showed a decline in average prices during October 2011, compared with October 2010. These include decreases in the prices of “Sink Stainless Steel with Mixer-Single”, which fell by 9.4 per cent, while “(PVC) Pipes” declined by 6.2 per cent and “Natural Stone” by 5.9 per cent

SCAD’s report monitors the prices of 21 groups of building materials

SCAD’s monthly report of building materials prices report surveys the prices of 21 groups of commodities and services that represent the most important materials used in the construction activity, including cement, aggregate, sand, wood, steel, concrete, cement blocks, etc.
