Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Higher Colleges of Technology are pleased to announce the date of the third WRDC Tour De Al Gharbia Cycle Race to take place on 16th February 2012. This year it is planned for the race to run inland, on the quiet road that leaves the shimmering coastal salt flats of Tarif and travels across gentle white sand dunes as they blend into the beautiful orange desert scenery that surrounds Madinat Zayed City, where after around 50 Km, the race will end. The race is sponsored by the Western Region Development Council and other partners include Mirfa Hotel and Abu Dhabi Police, along with support from Arab Cyclist, the Western Region Municipality and the Tilal Liwa Hotel.

Entering the race is free and open to all cyclists, individuals or teams, but you do need to register. This is easily done on the website: http://mzc.hct.ac.ae/tdag where you can also find a map. Individual cyclists and cycling teams come from all over the UAE to join Higher Colleges students from all seven Emirates and school students from across Al Gharbia, who cycle a shorter distance. Abu Dhabi Police and the Western Region Municipality are ensuring there is water and help stations all along the route.

After the race, there will be a Victory Ride to an awards ceremony and a well-earned lunch, where you can enjoy the company of other cycling enthusiasts. Every rider receives a medal for taking part and there will be prizes for the first three individuals and the first three teams.

Originally, the WRDC Tour De Al Gharbia was run from Liwa, on the edge of the magnificent Rub Al Khali desert, up to Madinat Zayed City. Last year it ran from Madinat Zayed along the brand new road to Ghayathi. Cycling is a clean and healthy way to travel. We hope to communicate the message that cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle benefits everyone. So, time to start preparing, there is no excuse now not to join the WRDC Tour de Al Gharbia 2012.
