The Web-hosting and domain-registration company, www.GoDaddy.com , confirmed that on Monday the websites and e-mail addresses it hosts for small businesses experienced some service failures. The company said it was concerned that it was attacked by hackers.
CEO Scott Wagner posted on the company website that the team was having some problems. He also expressed his concerns about the impact the situation had on the customers and promised that everyone at GoDaddy.com was working to solve the problem as soon as possible. The company tweeted later that some of the services it offers have already been restored.
The outages of hosted sites started around 1 p.m. ET but GoDaddy remained operational. However, by late afternoon, the company closed its website.
Twitter accounts which are thought to be affiliated with the hacking group Anonymous said that they were responsibe, nevertheless, the involvement of the group wasn’t officially confirmed.
Hackers have been targeting GoDaddy, which hosts more than 5 million sites, because it publicly supported federal anti-piracy legislation called the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA.
Some well-known opponents of the measure who claimed that the bill would smother innovation removed their domains from GoDaddy. A Twitter account believed to be associated with Anonymous posted on Monday that by using GoDaddy people support censorship of the Internet.
Some believe that the hacker who attacked GoDaddy probably had his reasons to do that but that his actions affected negatively many small businesses and not only the company which he was fighting against.
