Do you have trouble falling asleep? Well, you are not alone! According to recent studies, an amazing 30% of all adults suffer from insomnia. You have probably noticed that when you don’t get a good night sleep, you experience more difficulties throughout the day like loss of concentration at work and behind the wheel.

One of the things that largely affect your sleep habits is your bedroom. That is why it is important to decorate it in a, so to say, sleep-friendly way. Here are some basics to start with.

The Master’s Bed

The central piece of furniture in every bedroom is of course the bed. Therefore, we shall start with it! The key thing you should remember is to keep your bed at a certain distance from the windows and the door. Otherwise, you may end up with a stiff neck in the morning from the draught. That also helps creating a sense of balance in your room. This can actually balance your sleep too. In addition, get a bed with a stout headboard. That will give you a feeling of stability and security.

Lights Off

Strong light, natural or artificial, can confuse your body clock. As a result, you may experience some difficulties falling asleep. To avoid that keep the bedroom dark. If you don’t like the gloomy atmosphere then use soft light. There are special switches called dimmers with which you can control the amount of artificial light in your bedroom. Also, reduce the natural light in the room. For that purpose you can put blackout curtains on your windows.

Easy with the Colours

To add up to the peaceful atmosphere paint the room with some softened colours. Use shades that are light and neutral. For example, you can paint your bedroom in muted purple, blue, orange, yellow or green. Think of colours that make you feel comfortable and serene.

Less Mess

No matter how soothing colours you choose, or how much you dim the light, you will always have troubles sleeping if your bedroom is full of clutter. When your room is messy, your thoughts are more chaotic. So throw away everything that you don’t need like old unnecessary furniture or boxes. Keep socks off the floor and clothes off the chair. Put them in the wardrobe instead. Your bedroom must be tidy, simple and organized.

Forget that You are Living in the 21st Century

Talking of keeping things simple… remove all electronic devices from your bedroom. TVs, laptops, tablets, smartphones… all of that needs to go! Technology can easily distract you from your sleep. Moreover, not long ago health experts discovered that the glow coming from the screens of the devices can disrupt your bedtime rest. That is because their bright light tricks the brain into thinking that it is day.

Some More Tips

Do not mix sleep with work. Avoid working or studying in your bedroom. Our minds often connect these activities with stress and anxiety. Therefore, if you spend an entire day reading for your exams in the bedroom, you are very likely to lose most of your sleep in the night.

Make sure your bedroom smells nice and fresh. Use some air fresheners, but only those whose aroma is light, breezy and gentle. Also, change and wash the linen every week or more often.

Now start redecorating your bedroom to get a piece of healthy good night’s sleep! Sweet dreams!
