Manolo Blahnik has described platform shoes as “monstrous foot furniture”.
The legendary shoe designer is famed for his super-elegant stilettos.
When his ladylike heels were worn and loved by the Sex and the City cast, Manolo shot to worldwide fame.
The shoe maestro has revealed how the origins of his trademark shoes were born from his disgust of clumpy footwear.
“I tried to do platforms I really did, but ugh!” Manolo explained to British magazine Grazia. “They were so ugly like monstrous foot furniture, I knew it could never be for me. So I made thin heels and people loved them.”
The designer is set to launch two new UK boutiques later this month. Despite over 40 years working in the fashion industry, Manolo has changed his ideas and classic designs very little. The outspoken trendsetter knows what he likes and isn’t afraid to say it.
“I once did these shoes in the most disgusting, vile fluorescent green with nasty yellow effects – I mean you can see it now in the Lanvin collection,” Manolo controversially explained. “These colours are horrific.”
The designer’s signature style has been copied endlessly as his popularity has soared. Despite the fake versions of his killer heels available, Manolo is resolute that he would never cheapen his styles by implementing a trademark, such as a red heel .
“Never! The trademark for me is the woman who wears the shoe. I used to get upset about rip-offs but these days I couldn’t care less,” Manolo shrieked. “When I see it, I laugh. This is co-py! Not Manolo Blahnik. Noo!”
