Musical Les Miserables won four BAFTAs and Argo won in the most prestigious categories

Last night, the British Academy of Film and Television awarded the most successful and impressive movie productions for 2013. The biggest surprise and disappointment this year was critic’s favourite Lincoln. The motion picture received nominations in 10 different categories. However, it managed to win only one of them. The film’s star Daniel Day-Lewis got a BAFTA for Best Actor.

Les Miserables is already big in the UK so the movie’s success at the BAFTA’s was expected and almost inevitable. The film was awarded in four categories. That is fairly well since the musical had a total of nine nominations. Anne Hathaway made a big impression at the show not only with the fact that she won the award for Best Supporting Actress, but also with her acceptance speech. The famous actress thanked the author of the Les Miserables book Victor Hugo for writing such a wonderful work.

The other big winner was Argo. Ben Affleck’s flick won three out of the seven awards for which it was nominated. Moreover, it won in some of the most desired categories – Best Film, Best Director and Best Editing. Affleck seem both happy and surprised for receiving so much BAFTA love. He pointed out that this was only his second attempt as a film director.

The latest James Bond movie, Skyfall, received little praise and nominations at other recent film awards. The BAFTAs, however, gave away two of its awards to agent 007. Among them were Outstanding British Film and, thanks to Adele, Original Music.

In comparison, American hit movies went home without a single prize. Zero Dark Thirty had five BAFTA nominations but it got nothing. The same goes for The Master (four nominations) and The Hobbit (three nominations).

Interesting was the choice of the British Academy of Film and Television in the category Best Actress. The Academy awarded Emmanuelle Riva for her role in the French flick Amour. The 85-year-old actress defeated names like Helen Mirren, Marion Cotillard, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence.

Among the winners were also Django Unchained and Life of Pi. Quentin Tarantino’s film won two awards for Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz) and Original Screenplay. The Life of Pi also got two BAFTAs even though it had the chance to win nine. The flick received awards in the categories Special Visual Effects and Cinematography.
