Barbara Streisand, Adele, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Crowe are only some of the performers at this year’s Academy Awards

Something very strange is about to happen at this year’s Oscar Awards. It seems that the focus on the 2013 Oscars will be less on films and more on music. In fact, the media and the fans are more excited to watch the music performances at the 2013 Academy Awards that to see the actual Oscar winners.

What is known for now is that Shirley Bassey will be one of the singers who will take the show’s stage. Bassey is famous for the fact that she performed two of James Bond’s musical themes. In addition, Adele will sing the newest 007 song “Skyfall”. This will be her first show after the 2012 Grammy Awards. The British music phenomenon is also nominated in the category Best Original Song.

Actually these Bond music performances are possibly part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the popular action film. That means that other singers who have done a song for the movie can also appear. Rumour has it that all James Bond actors will unite at the Oscars stage and possibly the theme singers too.

But probably one of the biggest highlights at this year’s Academy Awards will be Barbara Streisand’s comeback. The 70-year-old singer has only performed once at the Oscars and that was 36 years ago. Back in 1977, Streisand made a brilliant performance of a song from “A Star is Born.”

Music is also making a comeback into movies. It has been a while since we saw the last big screen musical. This year, however, the genre was revived thanks to Les Miserables. The film not only impressed fans and critics, but it was among the most nominated productions at various movie awards. Les Mis was honoured by the Academy with eight nominations many of which were in prestigious categories like Best Original Song and Best Picture.

The resurgence of the musical will be celebrated with a performance by Oscar winners, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Crowe and Jennifer Hudson. All three of them are known for their music talent which they have shown more than once on the big screen. Zeta-Jones won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the musical Chicago in 2003. Hudson won the same award five years later for her work in Dreamgirls where she managed to outshine even Beyoncé. Crowe is part of the Les Mis cast and this was one of the first productions in which he showcased his musicality.

Singer Norah Jones is also said to perform at the Oscars this year. However, there is not much information about her actual act.

What we can conclude from all that is that the 2013 Oscar Awards will be one big celebration of music in movies. We only hope that films won’t take the backseat at 85th Academy Awards.

The Oscars will take place on February 24 (Sunday) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The show will be hosted by comedian Seth MacFarlane.
