Did you hear? Wearable smart devices are the new hit among technology companies. Right after Apple was rumoured to be working on a smart watch, Samsung announced that it will too launch a similar device. Next on board jumps Google! The search engine giant is now said to be also developing a smart wearable device.
This information was revealed by Financial Times in a recent report. According to the website Google is planning to release a smart watch in the near future. The gadget is said to be developed as an accessory for Android smartphones. It will reportedly connect to the phone and notify users of incoming messages, calls and emails.
There are little other details on Google’s watch. However, from Financial Times also unveiled a Google patent application from last year. The patent is about a smart watch and it shares some additional information on the device. It says that it will have a flip-up display, a build-in camera, as well as a touch screen. Further down in the patent, Google states that the watch will even have two displays – one on top of the flip lid and another under it.
Although some web sources claim that Google will release the smart watch this summer, the giant still refuses to give any comments on the rumours. Nevertheless, one thing is clear – the company already has some experience with wearable devices. Among its upcoming products is Google Glass which is a wearable computer with a head-mounted display.
Also, not long ago Google acquired Motorola. Therefore, it is possible that the new team may have the knowledge and skills to build a small-screen wearable device like a smart watch. Yet, Financial Times’ sources claim that Google is not relying on the same department this time around. Glass was built by the company’s X lab. Google’s smart watch, on the other hand is rumoured to be created by the giant’s Android unit.
Many things about Google’s smart watch news are still hazy. However, the same goes for Apple too. Only Samsung has announced that it is actually working on a wearable computer. Nevertheless, if the rumours are true Google will need to show us something really impressive and different if it wants to compete with old dogs like Samsung and Apple.
