Google doodle Earth day 2013Today we mark the date dedicated to environmental protection – Earth Day. This date was first celebrated back in the 1970s and now it is has a status of an official event in more than 190 countries. The purpose of Earth Day is to remind us, the people, of the importance of protecting and preserving the environment. Things like climate change, ice cap melting and ozone layers have become regular topics on many international topics that focus not only on environmental issues, but also on technology, economy and even fashion.

That is why it is strange to see, that the majority of headlines today are paying more attention to Google’s new Earth Day doodle, then Earth Day itself.

In this article we will not bore you with another series of a how-you-can-save-the-Earth list. Instead, we will focus on businesses and what they can do to make a change.

Recycle and reuse

Large companies are one of the biggest consumers of materials like paper and plastic. However, most of them see it simply as waste and not as reusable product. The truth is that recycling and reusing can be very beneficial for companies since many governments have the practice to financially stimulate this practice. In addition, it is not as expensive as most of them imagine it to be.

Invest in power-efficient technology and eco-friendly products

Technological devices are among the greatest enemies of the environment. However, they have become such an important part of companies that they cannot do without them. That is why it will be an unrealistic idea to force businesses to give up on technology. Instead they can invest in energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly products. They have the same qualities and purposes of traditional products and devices and even though they tend to be a bit pricier, they can save companies a lot in the long run.

Reduce Waste

Recycling waste is often not enough. Reducing it is also important. Companies can do that by building new internal strategies that limit the use of non-recyclable materials like plastic bags or cups, for example.

Keep it Clean

Another good way businesses can reduce their negative impact on nature is by keeping the area around their facilities clean. To do that, they can organize a big cleaning on every few months. In addition, they can also plant trees from time to time.

Do Not Object Climate Legislature

Due to the rapid changes in today’s climate, many governments adopt extreme eco-friendly laws that businesses often do not approve of. That is because they often require many additional costs for companies. However, if these measures are not taken today, they will be taken tomorrow when the costs for companies will much greater.
