RI100308_1The Department of Economic Development (DED) in Dubai and the Dubai Municipality (DM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch the ‘Bareeq Excellence Award’ for best practices and outstanding service in gold and jewellery sector. The award will complement the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme (DSES) of DED and strengthen ongoing efforts to enhance overall customer experience across the key sectors of Dubai’s economy.

Ali Ibrahim, Deputy Director General for Planning and Development Affairs at DED, and Engineer Salem Mohammed Bin Mesmar, Assistant Director General for Health, Environment and Safety at Dubai Municipality signed the MoU, which establishes a solid framework for co-operation between the Business Excellence Department of DED and the Dubai Central Laboratory Department (DCLD) of Dubai Municipality.

Under the agreement, the Business Excellence Department and DCLD will work together to bring all gold and jewellery outlets in the UAE to the DSES platform and recognise exemplary practices among them through the Bareeq Excellence Award. Gold and jewellery shops applying for the Bareeq Excellence Award should first apply for membership with the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme.

“The Bareeq Excellence Award marks a milestone for the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme and the strategic partnerships evolving within the Government of Dubai. It also reinforces the historic results the Business Excellence Department has achieved in the domains of quality, productivity, and customer service, through the Dubai Quality Award, Dubai Service Excellence Scheme and the Dubai Human Development Award,” commented Ali Ibrahim.

“DED will run special seminars and awareness sessions for organisations from the gold and jewellery sector in co-operation with Dubai Municipality to drive participation in the award. The strategic importance of the gold and jewellery sector to retail and tourism in Dubai makes it extremely important to have the highest service standards in this sector,” said Mohammed Bushanain, Executive Director, Corporate Quality & Management Excellence at DED.

“The Dubai Central Laboratory Department is the standardisation and metrology authority in Dubai entrusted with testing, conformity assessment and certification of products and measuring instruments to ensure consumer protection and customer satisfaction. DCLD also carries out inspection of establishments, including gold and jewellery shops to verify their compliance with Dubai Municipality regulations,” said Engineer Salem Bin Mesmar.

Gold and jewellery retailers that pass the quality audit of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department and enroll as a member of the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme can apply for the Bareeq Excellence Award. The audit is conducted by auditors by the Dubai Central Laboratory Department and as per the Gold Jewellery Trading Practice (GJTP) Bareeq Certification Scheme of DCLD. DSES membership is also granted on the basis of an evaluation process.

Applications for the Bareeq Excellence Award will be received by the Business Excellence Department while DCLD is in charge of auditing the shops. The two sides will conduct a joint assessment of the applications and announce the results. DED and Dubai Municipality will honour the winners with a certificate and trophy at a joint ceremony held every year.
