Although tablets appeared on the mass technology market back in 2010, they are on their way to outsell the good old PCs.
The growth in the amount of tablet shipments is expected to continue. This means that these mobile devices will probably start to sell better than portable personal computers like notebooks. Moreover, according to an IDC report, that may happen as soon as this year. In addition, in only three years, tablet PCs are expected to surpass all portable and desktop personal computers.
IDC reports that this transition on the market is of high importance and that it is taking place rapidly. The report adds that this trend can be explained with tablets’ fast growth and the slowdown on the market for personal computers.
The projection that tablet sales may surpass notebooks means that the market has shifted from PCs to portable smart devices. That is also proved by the latest statistics issued by Hewlett-Packard and Dell. The two companies reported that there have registered a decrease in the shipment of their PCs. In addition, both of them blamed the decline on the tablet sales.
It is predicted that by the end of 2013, the number of tablet shipments will hit nearly 230 million. That is about 58.7% more compared to 2012. In comparison, portable personal computers are said to reach only 187.4 million by the end of the year.
Even though Apple continues to maintain its position as the most popular tablet manufacturer, devices that run on Google’s Android OS are also selling well. That is because mobile devices that use Android are much cheaper than those which are powered by Apple’s iOS.
Another reason why tablets attract more consumer interest is that they are more affordable than PCs. The report explains that the average price of tablet devices is expected to greatly drop this year reaching $381. Personal computers, on the other hand, will sell at an average price of $635.
Nevertheless, the research company points out that tablets continue to be seen as a second device, while PCs – as the primary one. Therefore, although personal computers have their disadvantages, they are not predicted to retire from the market any time soon.
