Good news for consumers in Dubai and across the United Arab Emirates – there will be no rise in prices until the end of Ramadan. On Sunday, UAE’s Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection decided to stop processing the requests for increasing of prices.

Generally, people are used to the rise of prices of goods right before holidays, a usual practice not only in the UAE, but across the world. Retailers take advantage of people’s desire to stick to the tradition – serving special holiday meals and beverages and of course, giving presents to others to show love, appreciation and gratitude. Although this practice has always been seen as highly unethical by consumers, it has never been considered against the law. During its meeting in Dubai however, UAE’s Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection made a decision this Sunday to block price rises in the country until the end of Ramadan. This is largely seen as a move promoting consumer rights awareness among common people who are expected to spend large amounts of their finds during the Holy Month.

In addition to the blocking of price rises, there is a whole range of Ramadan initiatives launched in Dubai. One of them is the issuing of open lists of goods, so that consumers will be able to choose and save in some cases up to 50 percent. Another initiative will include promotions and discounts for various goods, as well as special Ramadan basket offers.
