The American College of Sports and Medicine (ACSM) published its annual survey on global fitness trends which are currently on the rise. However, the 2014 ACSM Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends surprises many fitness maniacs with its predictions for the upcoming year.

Some of the hottest fitness trends are not seen in the 2014 ranking, while others have dropped with a few spots. Zumba was one of the most popular fitness activities over the last couple or more years. In 2012, it took the 9th position and this year it was ranked at the 13th place. However, in 2014 it is expected to fall out of the top 20 and to land on the 28th spot.

Other popular fitness trends which have lost their charm are Pilates, Balance Training, Spinning, as well as Stability Ball. Like Zumba, none of them made it to the 2014 top 20.

So, who are the new leaders? According to ACSM’s report, the most popular fitness trend in 2014 will be High-Intensity Interval Training. This activity managed to dethrone the 2012 winner – Educated, Certified, and Experienced Fitness Professionals. This fitness trend remained on the top for the last four years. Nevertheless, next year it will drop to the 3rd position. The second spot will go to Body Weight Training.

According to some of the people who took part in the study, the reason for the changing tendencies in the field is the economy which is still struggling to revive. A big part of them believe that training programs that rely on expensive technical instruction or equipment have not chance in the current economic conditions. Today, people prefer something that can be both effective and affordable.

Here are the top 10 global fitness trends for 2014:
