How did you spend holidays? According to a new research, many people used their free days around Christmas and New Year’s Eve to download applications. In fact, app downloads registered over the last few days has hit record levels.
The latest statistics are published by Flurry. The analytics company tracked hundreds of thousands of the most popular mobile apps for both Android and iOS devices. The conclusion from the experiment was that app downloads spiked by 11% on December 25, Christmas Day in 2013 compared to 2012. The day-to-day jump in app downloads this Christmas was estimated at 25%. Although impressive, in 2012 the growth rate on December 25 was equal to 90%.
Researches state that this data shows that rate with which app downloads increase have started to gradually slow down. They explain that this is due to the maturation of the market. A large number of consumers already own a smart mobile device like a tablet or a smartphone. A great part of them rely mainly on applications which they trust and have used for a long time. As a result, they tend to rarely download new applications.
But why did app downloads increased during the holidays? One of the main reasons for this tendency is that people have more free time to explore applications stores and to fiddle with their mobile gadgets. The second big factor has to do with Christmas gifts. Tablets and smartphones were among the most popular presents during this holiday season. Many consumers received a smart mobile device this Christmas which has certainly contributed to the record application downloads.
The report also reveals that, just like the past two year, game apps were the most popular among users these holidays followed by social applications. Interestingly, lifestyle app downloads have hugely dropped this Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Moreover, they were even surpassed by media mobile applications. The research mentions nothing on shopping apps. Apparently, they are popular mainly before the holidays , during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. All in all, leisure-focused apps saw the greatest jump this holiday season.
The study concludes that due the market’s maturation, mobile app developers will need target specific users in order to be successful.
