The Hobbit fans most impatient or just the biggest “pirates”?
Towards the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014, various companies and blogs released all sorts of lists. However, this one seem to top them all. TorrentFreak has just introduced its ranking of the “most-pirated” movies of the year. The list is topped by “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which was reportedly downloaded 8.4 million times!
Even though illegal film downloads are hard to track, TorrentFreak has relied on a number of sources to comply its list. Among them are, of example, data from public torrent trackers. In other words, The Hobbit has definitely reached more than the above-mentioned 8.4 million figure.
The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey is not the only box office smasher on this unusual ranking. Django Unchained (2), Fast and Furious 6 (3), as well as Iron Man 3 (4) can all be found at the top of the list. Together with The Hobbit, Django Unchained is the only pirated movie which was downloaded illegally over 8 million times.
The people behind the study conclude that the majority of film titles in this ranking are “male-oriented.” One of the few exceptions is Silver Linings Playbook. It occupies the 5th position with 7.5 million downloads.
What is really surprising is that a number of highly popular movies which were released in 2013 did not managed to enter the ranking. For instance, Man of Steel and the second Hunger Games film are nowhere to be seen.
Take a look at the complete list of 10 most-pirated films of 2013:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: 8.4 million downloads
Django Unchained: 8.1 million downloads
Fast and Furious 6: 7.9 million downloads
Iron Man 3: 7.6 million downloads
Silver Linings Playbook: 7.5 million downloads
Star Trek Into Darkness: 7.4 million downloads
Gangster Squad: 7.2 million downloads
Now You See Me: 7.0 million downloads
The Hangover Part 3: 6.9 million downloads
World War Z: 6.7 million downloads
If we combine the number of the illegal downloads of just the ten films included in this list, we will get nearly 75 million! Just try to imagine the effect this figure could have to DVD or box office revenues. Despite that, TorrenFreak claims that movie earning in 2013 reached almost $11 billion which high enough to be called a record.
