Launching an online store has become a common practice for many businesses. Regardless of their size, growth rate, revenue and market niche, companies are willing to try out their chance in e-commerce. However,  there is a number of products which sell better on the web than others and they define the most profitable e-commerce sectors right now.

A new study by Bigcommerce has outlined a number of promising online store sectors and some not so popular. The results are based on a survey which included almost 50,000 customers, as well as growth rate statistics of leading online retailers.

According to the report, the e-commerce industry that witnessed the highest growth over the last one year was the automotive. The sector registered a jump of nearly 90% in revenue per store. The study reveals that the main reason for that rise is the huge demand for aftermarket car parts and accessories.

Another good choice is jewelry and accessories e-commerce businesses. They saw a revenue growth of 31% in 2013. Clothing online store revenues, on the other hand, fell by 4%. Although this is not a huge drop, e-commerce beginners are advised to first start with accessories and jewelry. After some time, they can also add apparel to their catalogue.

The third best online store industry is computers & software. Front runners from the sector are InformIT.com and HootSuite. Over the past year, it scored a revenue growth by more than 35%. It is closely followed by toys & games. Even though the demand in this field has decreased, revenues continue to be impressive.

It seems that pets really are man’s best friend. Animal & pet care online stores also make good money these days. Yet, they may soon witness a slight slowdown, since the demand has dropped by more than 5%.

The study also lists the e-commerce industries from which you should steer clear. Even though book, music & video items come at a very affordable price, the sector has witnessed one of the biggest demand fall in 2013. Revenues of these stores has also decreased by 14%. The research reveals that only the big fish, like Amazon.com and iTunes, can survive in this industry.

Very poor is also the performance of online stores that sell furniture. Although they now enjoy more consumer demand, their revenues continue to be one of the lowest.

It seems that picking the right e-commerce industry is crucial for the success of the store. Therefore, make sure you pick wisely and take a good look at the following rankings.

E-commerce industries that offer the highest revenues:

  • Automotive
  • Jewelry & Accessories
  • Computers & Software
  • Toys & Games
  • Animal & Pet Care
  • E-commerce industries that suffer the biggest losses:
