Last week, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing launched the #MyDubai project, aimed to creating the world’s first “autobiography of a city” through social media. After receiving more than 75,000 videos and images of the city in its first week, the organizers are now introducing an e-museum.
On January 5, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai, encouraged residents and visitors of the emirate to share their moments in Dubai. The year-long initiative #MyDubai was launched by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing to show the life and the culture across the city and tell the real stories via photographs and videos. People are able to contribute by using the hashtag #MyDubai in the social media websites Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Apparently the initiative was very successful – only in its debuting week, organizers admitted this Monday, they’ve gathered over 75,000 entries on Instagram. Twitter users were also very active – for a week, #MyDubai collected more than 27,000 mentions and around 198 impressions.
The huge response to the project inspired the launching of an e-museum that will store and display the best entries, announced from the Department. The social media account was opened with 25 of the best videos and images and another 10 will be added every week. This collection will be displayed on Instagram and Twitter will show various posts, including stories and articles. During this first week of the launch, people submitted photos and videos of family and adventure activities, the Dubai Shopping Festival, some of the most iconic buildings like Burj Al Arab, Atlantis or Burj Khalifa, the rain and the scenery in the desert.
The multimedia album, called for now e-museum, is just the first of several initiatives that will take place over the course of the year. These projects, including the e-museum, will be used for creation of the Dubai autobiography in collaboration with different governmental departments and organizations, according to H.E. Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing.
