Books are like movies, there is something for every taste. However, there are some must-read books, which are worth reading regardless of a person’s preferences and interests. Amazon is well-aware of this fact. That is why the company released a list called 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime. As one of the most successful publishers today, Amazon.com did an impressive job. Its big editorial team hand-picked all of the titles included in the list.
According to Amazon, the selection of the titles in its 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime list took months. As a result, however, the books in it vary in genres, audience, style and period. It includes everything from fiction to nonfiction.
Kindle Book’s Editorial Director, Sara Nelson, shared that the list is simply a “roadmap.” Therefore, it should not be viewed as a “home assignment.”
Amazon did not organized the books in terms of importance or rating. Instead, it simply listed them in alphabetical order. Nelson explained that books should not be ranked by their importance. She adds that all literary works are equally significant.
The company also published a few trivia facts about the books on its list. The oldest title is Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, which was published in 1813. Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, on the other hand, is the newest literary work in the collection. It was released last year. Also, the most widely discussed book is Orwell’s classic 1984. Of course, Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack can also be seen among the must-reads. The book topped Amazon’s Best Books of the Year list not long ago.
As you can imagine, editors did have a number of disagreement when selecting the titles for the list. However, there were are few on which they were unanimous. Those include Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie, Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken.
Amazon announced that its editorial team will revise the books on regular basis. In that way, the titles will remain culturally relevant.
