New York was crowned 2013 Top Global Fashion Capital steeling the title from London which was the most fashionable city in 2011 and 2012, according to the annual ranking by Global Language Monitor. Paris ranked in second place, followed by London, Los Angeles and Barcelona.
In February, Global Language Monitor, a U.S. company which analyzes trends in global languages, released its 10th edition of the Top Global Fashion Capital Rankings. It lists the cities based on the number of times they were associated with fashion and haute couture topics in print and online media outlets. After sporting the crown for two years, London has fallen to the third position this year below New York and Paris. With its centuries-long heritage and tradition in fashion, Paris comes at second place, only 0.05 percent below New York. According to Bekka Payack, New York-based fashion director for the Global Language Monitor, the Big Apple earned the prestigious title through its “disciplined, methodical, yet creative approach” to fashion industry.
Some experts disagree with the methodology of compiling the ranking, claiming that fashion capitals of the world have always been and always be New York, London, Paris, and Milan. However, the world changes and this year, the list reveals some surprising entries – Shanghai arrives at No.10 before well-established cities such as Milan (No.12), Madrid (No. 14), and So Paulo (No. 15).
