Miss India Worldwide, the international pageant for Indian communities, which takes place in the US and around the world, comes to the UAE. On June 20, Abu Dhabi is hosting the Grand Finale of the beauty pageant, which will see more than 40 winning contestants of Indian origin from different parts of the world competing for the crown.
The UAE isn’t the typical global beauty pageant destination, but this year, organizers of the only international Indian-dedicated beauty championship, chose the country for a host. The event was announced to take place in Abu Dhabi on 20th June after a fancy talent night in Dubai on 18th June. Since 1990, the pageant gathers contestants from Asian-Indian origin from communities all around the world and has become the largest ethnicity-focused event conducted on an international level. The first several championships took place in New York, USA, but in 1997, it was organized in Mumbai to celebrate the 50th anniversary of India’s Independence. Other cities that have hosted the prestigious event are Singapore, New Jersey, Johannesburg, Durban, Kuala Lumpur, and others. This year’s 23rd edition is the second for Abu Dhabi, after 2011 when Australian Ankita Ghazan took the title Miss India Worldwide.
According to Dr. Mansoor Al Obaidli, the official representative for the World Beauty Congress from UAE, this event will focus not solely on the contestant herself, but on the entire teams from each country. The team comprises of a hairstylist, a make-up artist, a national director, and of course, the model, which needs to be of Indian origin, between the ages of 17 and 27, never married, and a citizen, resident or born in the country she represents. The pageant has four rounds – Evening Gown, Indian Dress, Talent and Question-Answer. Besides the crown, the winner will take home a cash prize of $8000 and various sponsored gifts, including photo sessions and modeling assignments. And as a reigning Miss India Worldwide, she will also travel to various national pageants as a special guest.
Before the main Dubai & Abu Dhabi event, contestants from India will compete with each other on 7th June in Pune for the Indian national title, giving the right of participation at the Grand Finale. As for the delegate from the UAE, organizers still haven’t announced anything officially, but traditionally, there should be a UAE resident among the contestants. The current Miss India Worldwide is Nehal Bhogaita from the United Kingdom, who won the jury with her amazing Bollywood dance, even though she was deaf.
Organizers say that alongside Miss India Worldwide 2014 pageant, there will also be a Bollywood Film Festival and an Indian culinary week.
