Apple announced on Monday a record number of first day pre-orders of its latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. On day 1, pre-orders at Apple Store hit 4 million, which is double the pre-sales orders for iPhone 5 when it was released in 2012.

On September 9, Apple unveiled the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, launching officially on September 19 in initial selection of countries. Pre-orders for both devices started Friday, September 12, and according to Apple, the company received a record 4 million orders only in the first 24 hours. Analysts estimate that the iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus sales in the first weekend could be easily 10 million.

The unprecedented demand for new iPhones, which feature larger screens and longer battery life, exceeds the initial supply and this will lead to delays in shipping. Although many devices are set for delivery beginning this Friday, many customers will have to wait until October to get their iPhone. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will be delivered on Friday, but the larger 5.5-inch “Plus” model will arrive in October for most buyers. The company advised customers to arrive early on Friday morning at Apple retail stores as supplies are still limited. Additionally, the devices will be available also from select Apple Authorized Resellers, as well as carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless.

In the initial phase, starting Friday, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be purchased in the U.S., the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and Australia. On September 26, Apple is launching the smartphones in over 20 additional markets, including Russia, Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Luxemburg, Italy, Liechtenstein, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Taiwan, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The new iPhones will be equipped with “Apple Pay”, a new payment service, scheduled to launch in the U.S. next month. It will allow users to pay for their purchases with their smartphones.
