If we take a look at the best selling books of this year, we will reach to a few key conclusions. First, kids and teens have started to finally open up to books. Second, people are always looking for new ways to improve themselves. Third, movies encourage reading. Last, but not least, classics never get old.

StrengthsFinder 2.0” by Tom Rath is a self-improvement book and it is the most popular title on Amazon for 2014. This is actually the second edition of StrengthFinder that aims at helping readers finding their natural talents.

However, the best thing about this year’s top selling books is that the majority of them are either for children or for teens. Despite the rise of technological distractions like tablets and smartphones, young minds continue to appreciate modern literature. Kids’ favourite readers in 2014 were “Frozen Little Golden Book” and Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” The common between them is that they are both part of a large franchise. Young adults, on the other hand, got obsessed with Veronica Roth’s “Divergent” novels which reached the top of Amazon’s best selling list.

This year was also dominated by books, which inspired movie adaptations, like the above-mentioned “Divergent” and “Frozen Little Golden Book.” Among them were also titles like “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak and “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. Although they did enjoy attention before their big screen debuts, they became hits once Hollywood directors and screenwriters got their hands on them.

Many new and old classics can also be spotted among 2014’s best-sellers. Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” was first published in 1960, but it continues to capture people’s minds to this day. Donna Tartt’s novel “The Goldfinch,” on the other hand, was released last year. However, it can be called a modern classic. Tartt received a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with it. In addition, critics refer to it as one of best novels of the decade.

The wide popularity of these best selling books suggests that they have a unique charm that can be appreciated by every reader. That is what makes them the bestsellers of the year.
