Interpreter
There’s one huge difference between an interpreter and a translator you need to understand – the first one works with spoken languages, hence, needs to be fluent in at least two of them, while the latter translates written documents. Multinational organizations, corporations and government agencies hire both interpreters and translators, but the requirements vary – while some will need you only to show your skills, others will definitely require a college/ university degree and several years of experience.
Peace Corps volunteer
This job is also not for everyone – the pay isn’t much, there’s a long application process, and you should really want to change the world. But it can be extremely rewarding! There are many other international volunteer organizations, where you will be actually paid something (salaries are never high, of course), but you will have the chance to explore even the most distant, exotic countries and do some good in this world. One of the biggest is Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, and obviously you need to be a medical professional to apply for them.
International reporter
This is one of the best jobs for people who want to travel and work in this field. Of course, there are many requirements such as education, experience, and foreign language knowledge. But it is generally well-paid, respected and rewarding. You might want to avoid themes such as war, as you might get yourself sent at dangerous areas of conflict. Fashion reporters and journalists are also often required to travel – to Paris, New York, London, Milan, in order to cover fashion weeks and other big industry events.
Diplomat
It’s definitely the rarest job on this list, but it’s really not that hard to get it. In fact, if you have a bachelor’s or a master’s degree, know a language or two, and never had any problems with the law, you will probably qualify. Application process usually starts with submitting a resume and a cover letter, and then continues with essays on world events and issues, language tests, background checks, and interviews. There are also physical and mental health exams. There is no minimum age required, and you don’t need to be an expert in international relations or politics to become a diplomat. Diplomacy has nothing to do with politics!
There are many other professions that will let you, or require you, to travel such as a missionary, an archeologist, an ethnomusicologist, any kind of military personnel, importing or exporting agent, a geologist, a yacht sailor, and so on. While some of them are extremely specific, others are really weird and hard to do.
