Of the many fashion accessories scarves are some of the most versatile, fun and easy to wear. Adding one to your outfit is a simple way to complement your style and look effortless chic. Whether you are still new to scarves or just want to refresh your style, we have a few tips and ideas on how to wear a scarf to make the most of it.

Many of us have a scarf or two just lying around, but few know how and what to wear them it. Before discussing the various styles (there are limitless options), we need to point out a simple fact that not all fashion magazines will tell their readers – not every scarf looks great on your figure. As the accessory is usually worn around the neck, it affects the face and highlights the bust. That is why different kinds and styles will flatter different body shapes.

It’s essential to avoid large, long scarves if you have a more petite figure – it’s a basic fashion rule, yet many women have no clue. Opt for thinner and medium-knit textures; otherwise, you will just look funny. The rest of the ladies with average and curvy figures have a much larger choice. However, the fuller bust will require some more attention. In fact, in this case, you will want to avoid extra attention on your chest, so you can play with colours and styles to achieve that effect. Prints with a dark colour base will make the bust look slimmer and the bandana scarf style is one of the most appropriate.
The infinity loop – this style is cute and perfect for a chilly day. Make it with a simple, straight scarf by first tying the ends together to create a large loop. Hang the loop over your neck, placing the knot at the back and twist the scarf. Then just layer it once, or twice again- if it’s longer, and you have a simple, yet stylish accessory that can be worn with everything.

The European loop – this is one of the most common ways to wear a straight scarf and most of us have tried it. Fold it half lengthwise and drape over the neck, with the folded end much shorter. The folded end will create a loop – just slip the non-folded end into it. You can achieve more volume with a longer scarf – instead of folding it once in the beginning, fold it twice for a shorter, ticker scarf. The classic look is favoured by the guys, too.

The waterfall – this style works nicely with a crossbody bag and can be worn by both men and women. It’s a bit bohemian, hippie-influenced and very popular. Wrap the scarf around the
neck twice, leaving one end longer than the other. Take the longer end by the corner and make another loop, but tuck the corner at the back of the neck. The exact shape will depend on the scarf, but if done right, the unattached corner will look like a waterfall.

The braid – this starts as the European style, but continues in a chic twist. Once you’ve fit the non-folded end into the loop, twist the folded one over itself in an “8” form. Twist it a few times, and fit the rest of the non-folded end into the loop, created by the twist. Adjust it a bid and you will have a nice, different accessory to refresh your look.

The celebrity look – Having a light scarf that you don’t know how to wear in the spring? Wear it like a star! Wrap it around the neck twice, or thrice, leaving one end longer than the other. Fit one end through one of the loops, so it’s dangling underneath. Then tuck the other end into the same (or other) loop, leaving just the fringe sticking out.

Turtleneck scarf – this style looks like a combination of a turtleneck and a scarf and keeps you warm during the chilling months. Take a pashmina scarf and fold it in half. Wrap it over the neck, with the ends draped over your back. Crisscross the ends and bring them back over the front, tying a knot with them. The knot should be loose. Tuck it underneath the wrapped part of the scarf, keeping everything a little loose. The top layer of the scarf should cover the knot. Balance out everywhere and you’re done.

The easy turban – why not wearing a scarf as a headpiece? Take a lightweight, square fabric scarf and take the two opposite corners to fold it diagonally. Fold the scarf several times to create a headband-like form and wrap it around the head with the ends at your forehead. Crisscross them and wrap again but this time, make a knot at the back of your head. Tuck the ends of the knot into the wrapped fabric and you have the easiest turban ever.

There are many other ways you can wear a scarf – on the waist as a belt, as a scarf-tie (simply tying it like a tie), around a hair bun, and so on. Hipsters, both boys and girls, love scarves in all seasons and wear them with everything (as they don’t really care how it looks like, or so they say). However, you should be more thoughtful how to style it and what clothing, hairstyle and even shoes to wear it with. Add a pair of trendy sunglasses and a fashionable handbag, and you will have that glamorous-casual look that our favourite celebrities love to show off.
