International Women’s Day celebrates the appreciation, love and respect towards women and it highlights women’s social economic and political achievements. Also, on every March 8 there are various events that focus on women’s right and gender equality. However, if you are not in a mood for such serious and formal celebrations you can always organize yourself a movie marathon of girl power films over the weekend. So, you will not only unwind, but also celebrate March 8. That may sound like an unconventional idea, but it will definitely add more fun to your day and wake a celebratory mood in you!

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games’ Katniss Evedeen is, without a doubt, one of the toughest female characters in modern cinema. Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence successfully recreates this inspiring book character on the big screen. Katniss is very natural and brave, which makes her the perfect leader of a rebellion.

Brave

Who said that Disney princesses are fragile and helpless. Brave’s Merida is a Scottish princess who does not mind breaking rules and traditions. According to film critics, she is also a breath of fresh air among Disney’s princesses simply because she is not the classic damsel in distress.

Erin Brockovich

This movie is based on a true story and it stars Julia Roberts, whose performance in it won her an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors’ Guild Award for Best Actress. The movie itself won a number of prestigious awards. The film tells the selfless battle of a single mother against a chemicals corporation, which is secretly poising thousands of people.

Million Dollar Baby

Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby” was also honoured by various awards shows. Hilary Swank’s performance in the movie as an aspiring boxer will keep you stuck to the screen from beginning to end.

Ella Enchanted

If you are not in a movie for a rough and serious girl power film and you prefer something laid back and funny, do watch “Ella Enchanted” this is fairytale-inspired, yet very goofy comedy. Anne Hathaway plays the main character. Apart from her acting, Hathaway also shows off her singing talents in the film.

Thelma and Louise

“Thelma and Louise” is one of the rare movies, which enjoyed both box-office and critics’ success. The film and the performances of actresses Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis continue to be highly praised to this day. As soon as it was released in 1991, the production turned into one of the most iconic Hollywood movies of all time.

The Help

This film explores problems with which women of various generations had and have to face. Similar to “Freak Friday” and “The Hunger Games,” it is based on a novel. Also, just like “Million Dollar Baby” and “Erin Brockovich,” it won countless of awards in almost any category you can think of.
