Etisalat leads the set of UAE firms that made it to the Forbes list of “The World’s Biggest Public Companies” in 2015. A total of 13 Emirati companies are ranked in the comprehensive list of the largest and most powerful corporations across the world, topped by Chinese and American businesses.
The Forbes “Global 2000” is a comprehensive ranking of the top 2000 companies in the world, based on their revenues, assets, profits, and market value. This year, the public companies listed come from 61 countries and have combined revenues of $39 trillion, while their asset worth is estimated at $162 trillion. Amazingly, the four largest banks in China occupy the top four spots, with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China ranked first for a third consecutive year. At No.5 comes the biggest American company – Warren Buffet’s conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway. In fact, all companies in the top 10 are either Chinese or American.
However, along with global mammoth corporations, 13 firms from the UAE has made it to the list this year. These include Etisalat, which is ranked the highest at No. 383, followed by the National Bank of Abu Dhabi (No.655), Emirates NBD (No.666), the First Gulf Bank (No. 674), Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (No. 841), Emaar Properties (No. 955), DP World (No. 976), Dubai Islamic Bank (No. 1182), Mashreq Bank (No. 1354), TAQA (No.1423), Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (No.1464), Union National Bank (No.1484), and Aldar Properties (No.1965). Amazingly, telecommunications services firm Etisalat is apparently the largest company in the UAE, beating even banks, with sales of $13.28 billion and 39,508 employees. Although it is 383rd in the overall ranking, it comes at number 288, when it comes to profits – 2.4 billion.

While the biggest technology companies are Apple and Microsoft, the largest Internet retailer is Amazon (No. 458), followed by eBay (No.593), and Japan’s Rakuten at 736th spot. Macy’s is the largest department store (No.411), Fujifilm (No.439) is the biggest in consumer electronics, while Google (No.39) is the biggest in computer services. It is followed by IBM at 44th place, while Facebook at No.280, followed by Yahoo at No.476.
