How to have the best travel experience in your life? How to experience more joy on your vacation? You plan ahead, take safety measures, and search for flight deals. Still, there are some little details that can turn your dream trip into a nightmare. But there are some practical, creative strategies that can improve travelling for good. See the 10 surprising secrets of smart travelers.

Rolled clothing takes up less space in your suitcase then folded clothing. Roll your clothes, place them in the bag and instead of bringing all your shampoos, hair-conditioners, cosmetics, use contact lens cases to take just enough of these essentials. If you are carrying a dress shirt, iron it, fold it, and place it on top of your clothing. To keep the collar stiff, place your rolled belt in it. Once it’s done, place two or three dryer sheets, so your clothing stays fresh.

When you unpack at the hotel room, you will probably see wrinkles on your clothes. Just take the hot bulb (with a piece of cloth, so you don’t get burnt) from the lamp in the room to lightly smooth them. Another way to “iron” clothes is to hang them not in the closet, but in the bathroom while you are having a hot shower.

Long flights always leave us tired and not exactly looking our best. Take a sleep mask for the flight, but before putting it on, apply a depuffing eye mask to arrive looking fresh and rested. And always bring a satin pillowcase – you won’t have to deal with “bed-head” and morning facial creases. It also minimizes wrinkles.

Bring duct tape. It may sound silly, but torn sandal straps and handbag handles are quite common when walking through the city all day. In fact, duct tape is multifunctional and it doesn’t take a lot of space, so you’d better be prepared for any situation. Another life-saver is the water mist spray. Bring a small bottle at all times if you are visiting a warm country. Antibacterial wipes and a lightweight scarf can protect you from falling sick after flying on a budget airplane.

Forget about normal-sized toiletries – small containers (for cosmetic samples) an actually hold a week’s worth of a shampoo or toothpaste. Such samples are often offered for free when you buy another cosmetic product from that brand – just look online or at some local stores. Ask whether there are hotel amenity kits – they usually include soap, toothbrush and a toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner.
