According to ICM, this new trend has to do with the collector’s value of physical copies. Physical editions of movies, TV shows and music albums have a collector’s value, whereas digitally downloaded songs and movies have value only for the person who has invested in them. Nevertheless, digital downloads are more used compared to physical copies. About 15% of shoppers who buy physical formats have stated that they do not music and movies with the intention to enjoy listen or watch them. They simply want to have it in their collection. In many of the cases, physical copies remain unpacked.

According to the same survey, iTunes is the top choice of U.S. consumers, whereas Amazon reigns in the United Kingdom. Consumers, particularly those aged between 18-24, were found to be three times more likely to purchase a music album in its digital form than in its physical one. This means that online stores have become the top choice of shoppers today.
