What is the main thing that you do online? If you are like the majority of people today, you probably spend a lot of time on social media websites. A new survey has found that almost 50% of the time we spend online, is dedicated to social media platforms.
A new report by GlobalWebIndex reveals that using social media websites is the most popular online activity in the world. According to the research, about 40% of the time we spend online is spent in social networking and micro-blogging. If we add reading and writing blogs, that percentage quickly spikes up to 50%.
However, some countries are more fond of social media than others. For instance, countries like Japan, the Netherlands, France and Germany spend less than 0.5 hours a day on social media sites, whereas the Philippijnes, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina spend 2.75 hours per day on the average.
The United Arab Emirates is almost mentioned in the report. The Gulf country is ranked 7th in world in time spent online. It is listed after nations like Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Brazil. The most popular online media activity in the UAE is social networking, followed by micro-blogging, listening to online radio and blogging.

The results from the survey also show that traditional media is has already been replaced by online media. On a global level, the average web user can spend more than 6 hours. In addition, in countries like Brazil, Malaysia and Thailand this can reach up to 8 hours per day. The only exceptions are Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, the U.K. and France. These countries continue to value traditional media channels more compared to their online alternatives.
